Your main LAN (from the ISP provided router) is 192. 4) The way I configure the LAN and VPN subnets on the VPN device (in this case, your C7) is possibly a bit odd and is contrary to what they will tell you in the OpenVPN documentation, but it works perfectly and I’ve done this many times Use the overlapping subnets for C7-LAN and VPN, but make sure it is different than your main LAN. On the C7, set Network > Interfaces > LAN to 192. 0/24, the WAN port of the C7 has an address in this subnet. You can use different network/subnet values, but follow the same logic.

The server will need to be configured to deal with this traffic somehow, such as by NATing it to the internet, or routing it through the server site’s HTTP proxy. Also note that OpenVPN must be installed and run by a user who has administrative privileges (this restriction is imposed by Windows, not OpenVPN). More discussion on OpenVPN + Windows privilege issues. The restriction can be sidestepped by running OpenVPN in the background as a service, in which case even non-admin users will be able to access the VPN, once it is installed. Remember that OpenVPN will only run on Windows XP or later.
In Part 2 (advanced) we will show you how to build OpenVPN certificates so that peers can securely authenticate with each other, and you can connect to the server using the regular OpenVPN client. We will also explain how to change the encryption ciphers used.
